Incredible Hulk (Widescreen Edition)

Incredible Hulk (Widescreen Edition)

Watch the 2003 version of The Hulk, and then watch the 2008 release. Obviously the new release is a HUGE improvement over the previous. Better script, better special effects, better cast led by Ed Norton, Tim Roth and Liv Tyler. Overall, this film is the better of the two... but that still is not saying much.

I have to go on a limb and say this movie was hyped to the point of near self destruction. It is possible the hype was created because this was known to be the year for comic book action adventure movies to explode into the box office. Sure enough, it was... Iron Man came through and made a huge impact on the big screen. Dark Knight shattered so many box office records they practically had to shove it into it's own category. Even Harry Potty 6 (a highly anticipated movie) needed to be puched back to winter of 2009 because of the competition created by the Marvel and DC Comic universe. Clearly, comic books have made a huge impact on screen writers, and frankly I see no end in sight.

When first saw The Hulk, I was so excited to finally see a version worthy of my time that I even rented the 2003 version just to have a chance to give it a symbolic farewell gesture. That excitement, excluding the performance of Ed Norton and Tim Roth, was met instead with a feeling of betrayal; a stone cold slap in the face which left the bitter scar of six years of waiting bruised into my face by an oversized green palm.

Better screenplay? Sure, but this doesn't change the fact that the film was completely predictable, and had absolutely no inspiration at all. From beginning to end, it was the same thing: nerd gets mad, nerd turns into Hulk.

Better special effects? Absolutely... but this comes with six years of evolving film technology. This entire movie was based abround how many times special effects could be used. The movie might as well have been a Jon Woo or Jerry Bruckheimer produced "action packed thriller" directed by Michael Bay. Better special effects do not make for a better movie. If any reader does not believe me, watch The Fountain, Pi, and Requiem for a Dream... all by the same director, Darren Aronofsky, who uses almost no CGI in any of his films.

Better actors? Here is my one critique that will not be negative. Edward Norton is now and has been my favorite actor since I first saw him in Primal Fear (starring along side Richard Gere). Tim Roth, another fantastic actor since stepping out of the shadows of earlier with with Quenton Tarantino in films such as Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, gave a great performance which almost overshadowed Norton. These two combined make the movie worth watching. However, their efforts alone do not make the movie worth the hype it received.

Only two stars? Why not?... I am dissapointed in this movie. I do not feel like I should give it a higher review simply because of the fact that it isn't worth more than what it delivered to me. It delivered a two star level of satisfaction, and I use the word satisfaction loosely.

Planet Earth - The Complete BBC Series

Planet Earth - The Complete BBC Series

I have been watching many high definition movies and this production is nothing less than spectacular. We do not have the most advanced audio system but the sounds is great. The scenes and the quality of video shooting is incomparable. On top of all that, the subject is entrancingly interesting. Must have? yep.

Iron Man (Two-Disc Special Collectors' Edition)

Iron Man (Two-Disc Special Collectors' Edition)

the movie itself was awesome--good acting, nice storyline, super graphic scenes...and the graphics on bluray makes it SO MUCH BETTER! theres truly a difference with bluray VS reg. DVD's. just totally worth it!!

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Widescreen Edition)

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Widescreen Edition)

Here we go again. Another star wars movie with a twist...its animated. I am not a avid star wars fan, however, I have seen the new trilogy not the old one. I was excited to finally see this movie and I wasn't disappointed. The plot was simplistic at best and wasn't bombarded with idle chit-chat. It was a thrill ride from beginning to end, I don't care about the naysayers have to say. I felt that the movie was fresh, a nice change of pace, amazing feature film. The action never stifled or faltered it kept up with the film. The relationship between Anakin and the padawan was incredibly deep and moving. I felt a connection and was rewarded. If you are a crazed star wars fan you will nick pick this movie to death. Watch this movie because it was to the point and filled with action. I recommend this film.

Jillian Michaels - 30 Day Shred

Jillian Michaels - 30 Day Shred

I love this workout! Yes, you will be challenged - anyone who says otherwise needs to raise their weights or move faster! The 2nd best part is that the 3-2-1 intervals make it move fast for you - just when you think you can't go on, you know you are about to switch. The 1st best part is the fast results! I have only lost 3 lbs., but that was not my goal. After the first 10 days, my clothes fit better, and I have lost inches everywhere. I have not made it to the 3rd workout yet, but am pleased with the fun and the challenge from the first 2. I'm scared for #3 - I'll review again when I get there!

Family Guy, Vol. 6

Family Guy is hysterical. Every season is better than the last. If you have previous seasons, you need this one.

Doctor Who: The Complete Fourth Series

Doctor Who: The Complete Fourth Series

that David Tennant has stepped down after next year's periodic specials.

My family and I were vacationing in England and just happenned to turn on the telly when 'Stolen Earth' was being broadcast. Of course, it is a TBC story, and as we were leaving the UK before the week was out, we thought we would miss the second half- only to discover 'Journey's End' was broadcast the next night! I finally received this box set we were able to view the conclusion after five months of waiting.

All I can say about Tennant's Doctor is he is POSITIVELY BRILLIANT!!!!! I was a fan from the Tom Baker days, and after college pretty much forgot about the Doctor until this past July.

The difference in special effects, stories, casting and overall packaging of the show is the difference between the original Flash Gordon B/W films and Star Trek TNG- not to say the Who series suffered terribly from low budgets- the stories and the characters were what really caught you, wasn't it then?- but it was great to see modern CGI effects and a bigger budget for sets and music elevating the Doctor series to its present glorious heights.

Solid writing, great callbacks to earlier series, and just a wonderful exploration of the Doctor's character and his companions is outstanding- Only the Davros at heart can be disappointed!

Tropic Thunder

Tropic Thunder

I have been writing reviews for movies since 1970, back when I was the Entertainment Editor of my college newspaper. I have seen some great movies, and by "great movies," I mean movies like CASABLANCA, GONE WITH THE WIND and CITIZEN KANE. TROPIC THUNDER isn't in their league, but it is a GREAT movie, nonetheless. Funny on one level. Crude on another. A satire about the movie industry on still another level. It's like APOCALYPSE NOW and NETWORK rolled together for the 21st Century.

The acting centers around excellent performances by Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Jay Barachel, and Brandon T. Jackson as solders in a Vietnam War movie who, due to cost overruns (after 5 days the movie is already one month behind schedule) are taken by the director to the jungles of Vietnam where it is to be shot "gorilla" style, ala BLAIR WITCH PROJECT.

While all of the performances, including the strong support performances by Danny R. McBride and Nick Nolte, are terrific, Robert Downey Jr. performance as a 5-time Oscar Award winning Australian actor, who undergoes a pigmentation alteration procedure operation to make him look more like an African-American, and who remains in character until the DVD commentary is finished (which he actually did, if you listen to the actor's commentary).

In addition to the comic scenes, the action scenes, and the satire scenes, the interplay between black actor Brando T. Jackson as Alpa Chino and Robert Downey Jr. playing in character a black actor is funny and so true to life.

SPOILER ALERT FOR JUST THIS PARAGRAPH: If there is any weakness in this movie, and especially the Blu-Ray and the regular DVD "Director's Cut" (Tropic Thunder) (Unrated Director's Cut) DVD's by director Ben Stiller, is that the extra 14 minutes in the "Director's Cut" does not really add much to the movie. In comparing the two versions, you see an extra snippet here, such as when Ben Stiller is asked by his agent, Matthew McConaughey, who does a great turn as his agent, how the adoption is going, and we see a five-second snippet of Ben looking at a young Vietnam boy with a real ninja knife with two burly bodyguards. Or, an actor saying something in one version, and something else in the other version (as when Stiller says in the opening scene in the director's cut, "When we get back, I'm going to teach you how to juggle," versus "When we get back, I'm going to teach you how to play the piano" in the R-rated version.) In the first instance, the 5-second glance at the adopted boy, if added to the movie would have made the scene at the end of Ben going back to stay even funnier. In the second instance, it is a toss-up as to which one is funnier.

When these "Director's Versions" first cropped-up, it was usually because the studio wanted the movie a certain length and cuts had to be made and good scenes deleted. However, now it just seems the "Director's Version" is used as another opportunity to sell the same movie to the public. To me, and Director Ben Stiller noted several times in the "Director's Version" commentary, these "extras" were cut to make the theater version tighter, and this shows because the theater version flows better. I wish we could have had both version on the Blu-Ray disc in addition to the great "extras."

BTW, I found it interesting that at a local store I noticed the "R-Rated Version" could not be purchased by anyone under 17, but the "Director's Version" could be bought by anyone, regardless of age.

Speaking of the actor's commentary that accompanies all of the DVD versions, it is terrific, especially Robert Downey Jr. as he remains in character during his comments about the movie, just as he said he does in the movie dialogue. The Blu-Ray disc has a few more extras than the double DVD version for approximately the same price, but its picture is so much better, so I would recommend the Blu-Ray version over the double DVD version if you have both types of players.

I would be remiss to not mention one other performance, and that is the one given by Tom Cruise as the megalomaniac Hollywood producer. His make-up was so good that in the theater when I saw the movie, I did not recognize that it was Tom Cruise playing the part.

TROPIC THUNDER is not a movie for everyone, but if heavy doses of profanity and some grotesque scenes are not too upsetting, you will find it very funny and maybe even thought provoking. Whatever the case, it provides the viewer with some great water cooler fodder.

The Office: Season Four

The Office: Season Four

Good season. I was a fan of the hour-long episodes because a lot of the latest season's episodes seem too short. Not a lot of episodes... probably because of the hour-longs and the writers strike.

I just wish there were more commentaries and special features. This DVD set seems to have even less than seasons 2 and 3.

Cause, I mean, without the commentaries and special features I might at well record the season myself and not bother buying the DVDs.

I bought this for my five year old daughter for christmas. We saw a clip online and it looks good. She likes the music and the pets. She wants the dolls that sing too.
